surrealism began with the idea that a higher consciousness, a greater awareness of one's own psychology, could be attained through stream-of-consciousness writing. only later was "surrealist" used to describe works of physical impossibility that defied reality, and so surrealism became synonymous with absurdity. the original surrealists were on a quest for truth in a world continually heaped up with mythology and ignorance. surrealists are idealists clinging to the naive hope that objectivity can still be found.
every chord has been played before, every note has been struck; there is nothing new under the sun. an original idea is borne out of honesty, out of the pursuit of truth. art is an expression of feelings deeply held, and in this truth we find beauty. Not all music is as cerebral as this; sometimes a melody merely evokes a memory. Sometimes the notes make you contemplate the future, sometimes they make you think back, but all music makes you feel something. hopefully this something is good.
